I had a Finex 10" skillet that was my go to skillet and it got lost in our move from OR to IN.

My wife got me a new one for our anniversary. It hasn't been delivered, yet, but these skillets make great serving dishes as well as great skillets.

They are expensive, pretty heavy, and totally not worth it just for the cooking, but damn they are nice. The bottom of the skillet is milled to a smooth finish and it is pre-seasoned with organic flaxseed oil. The octagonal shape gives you natural pouring spouts, and the handle keeps it a little cooler than a traditional handle (looks really cool, too).

This would make a great gift for a cook in your life.

If you think they are too expensive, you're probably right, but their 5 qt Dutch Oven with lid is "only" $280, so it is priced less than a similar size Le Creuset - I would expect both to last long enough to pass to your heirs.

I have a grill pan, already, but I don't use it nearly as much as the skillet. So I will now have two, as well.

I will probably add the Dutch Oven, at some point, too.

I’ve heard Fines are outstanding.

On the flip side my wife is 60 and really is struggling with the weight of the bigger cast iron skillets such as the 12”. I have a cast iron skillet that is much bigger than 12” and she literally can’t even clean it when I cook with it. She had surgery on her right hand and the strength just can’t seem to come back pre surgery. I need to find smooth bottom cast irons that are good but lighter in weight. I have not a clue if such an animal exist.

The Finex skillets have a nice sized lip on the opposite side from the handle that allows you to pick up the pan with both hands. That doesn't help when cleaning, though, when you have to scrub with one hand and hold it with the other. However, they definitely weigh in heavier than most.

There are French carbon steel pans that are very lightweight. Not cast, but still nice.

A search on Amazon.com shows a variety of pans she might like. They need seasoning, just like cast iron, but cook well, when seasoned. You can cook anything in them just like you do in cast iron. They don't hold the heat quite as well as cast iron because they are not as dense(Heavy), but still cook very well.

I had one I used in camping for many years. It was a very good campfire pan, then someone stole it and I never replaced it.

They are exactly like Woks, except skillet shapes.

I just don't get the high costs for new cast iron, even the enameled stuff. My 5 qt Lodge Dutch oven was $40, and does just about everything I need it to do. Some larger roasts won't fit in it, but outside of that, it is my go to for browning meat, roasts, Chili, large soups etc. Bonus that the lid doubles as a 10 inch skillet. I can understand higher prices on used/collectable stuff like Wagner, but just can't pull the trigger on something that costs 7x as much without a big improvement in performance.

Oh, it performs better. Maybe not 7 times better. Its also a show piece and will last forever. That is why I have 10 cast iron pieces, and 8 of them are Lodge.

Pretty much the same here. I'm sure my wife would love something that looks nicer than our old stuff. She finally came around to the realization that cast iron isn't hard to care for and cooks great. Most of my stuff is older that was passed down from grandparents. I have a small skillet that was my grandmother's, a larger one that was my other grandmother's, and a 4 inch Small Fry and a flat skillet that she made biscuits on. All of the stuff I bought new is Lodge, and I think that is 6 of what I have.

I recently got a "wrought iron" pan from Solidteknics and it is now my go to "cast" iron pan. It's much lighter than normal cast iron but heavier than carbon steel. I highly recommend checking them out!
