I think St. Arnold's brews some pretty damn good beer. From the year-round Ambers and Lawnmowers to the seasonals like Spring Bock, Summer Pills, and Pumpkinator. For those of you who only think SA is "meh":

I might be just a little biased since I'm from Houston too
Spring Bock is my fave
The brewery is tapping a couple of DR12 kegs today FYI

I've been to the brewery once. Was several years ago and very crowded. Not worth the lines to get beer. It's crazy to see how many people show up at brewery tastings yet they refuse to open more than 2 or 3 hours a week, usually all on Saturday 1-3 or so. At least Saint Arnold has improved here

A couple changes in beer laws in Texas and this place would blow the frick up with brewers. You know how people here are, they'll buy anything "made in Texas" anyways
Austin already is... Houston is lagging behind but you still have some good stuff with No Label, Karbach and Buffalo Bayou. None of them are world class but they are all solid.
quote:Same thing with Abita. And Saint Arnold >> Abita. DR#11 and Pumpkinator are better than anything Abita has put out except maybe a couple of selects.
They may be the biggest, but you know they ain't the best this state has to offer.

I'm not talking "three new breweries in the Houston area"
I'm talking about blowing up like the California beer scene where you would have dozens and dozens of breweries in Harris or Travis counties

well I won't disagree with that
difference is Abita won't put out stupidly small amount of their best beers like Saint Arnold's will. I mean, seriously, only sending in enough to last 45 minutes at the downtown Specs? That's just cheap, fake, gimmicky bullshite

I believe Austin has over a dozen... but yeah Houston really should be blowing up more, and even Austin has more room for growth. You know as well as I do how much better you have it than those of us in Louisiana though!

I can appreciate the growth in Austin, but Houston and DFW have a long way to go yet
You have much better access to much better beer within 30 minutes of your house than I do. Hell, you'll get DR12, I won't even lay eyes on a bottle

What sort of Texas wasteland do you live in?
Fort Stockton or something?

near Nacogdoches. The closest Specs is an hour away. I call two local liquor stores to let them know about beers coming out so they can try to get them. East Texas sucks for beer.
I should take a picture of the beer coolers at the local grocery stores. It's a wonder I even like craft beer with as pitiful as their selection is

Select Oyster Stout... BR got like 10 kegs!

even if they all suck, one has to suck less than the rest
that one is the "best"

And the guy whose recipe it was lives here. Meanwhile NYC got a shite ton of it.
But at least Saint Arnold bottles their good stuff. I'd respect Abita a helluva lot more if they bottled their Selects.

then promptly ships it out of state

Just to Louisiana... it would fly off the shelves here too if people knew more about it.
