Does anyone have any experience advice using one of these? I was looking at the lavalock charcoal baskets with or without the minion method dividers. There’s several different size boxes also. Not sure how big or small to go and how long it’ll keep burning. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks

I use one in my OK Joe. It’s essential and absolutely worth the money in ease of ash and temp control. Highly recommend.

Quick tip, but your grill sideways instead of lengthwise in the firebox. Gets another 2 inches of air flow and makes a big difference.

What type/size basket you have?

If lavalock
Do you have the one with the minion bars?

No clue, whatever one fits in my smoker. They are purpose built for the OKjoe.

It’s a metal basket, don’t overthink it.

Do you want longer burning lump and better airflow from an offset? Buy the one that fits, its 40 bucks don’t sweat it. It pays for itself in time and effort the first smoke.

I got the joe on a deal for 70 bucks. Added the tuning plate and basket and run four lump at 225 for 2 hours without putting my eyes on it.

My firebox is pretty big

21” long
18” or so front to back

The real question is would you go as big as fits?

I use charcoal to start and only use logs for my smoker. I think wood is the best way to go.

I use a chrome basket I got at Bed Bath and Beyond for like $5-10. Looks similar to this. Ask your wife where to get a 20% off coupon.

Basically my firebox is capable of fitting either of the following lavalock boxes.

15 x 15x 8
12 x 12 x 6
12 x 10 x 6

Not sure if bigger is better or what size to go with?

Make one out of expanded metal. This will allow you to get the size you want. Search the net for instructions it's fairly simple. I made one when I had an off-set.

I’d go for the largest. Always can use less fuel.
