I always separate mine because I find I get a more even cook on that flat this way in my smoker. And it gets more smoke, rub, and bark the flat as well so it turns out more flavorful. Then I make burnt ends from the point. Both ways come out great, I just prefer separating them myself. When I used to use a horizontal smoker I would leave the point on and stick the point towards the fire box. One of the many reasons I went away from the horizontal smoker was because of the uneven heat in the smoke chamber.
