Since I generally suck at cooking, and only come to this board to garner your wisdom, and seldom have anything to offer the FB, I bring you a recipe.
Our hostess prepared this punch for Thanksgiving, and it was huge hit with everyone.
It came from Southern Living, and I couldn't find a link to it, so I'll just retype from the photocopy that she shared with me:
Thanksgiving (Bourbon) Punch
Heat 1 cup packed light brown sugar, 1 cup water, 3 (3") cinnamon sticks, and 4 star anise in a small saucepan over med-high. Cook, stirring often, until sugar dissolves and simmer 5 minutes. Cool and chill.
Combine 8 cups chilled apple cider, 750 ml Champagne or PResecco, 2 cups bourbon (or 2.5), 1 cup orange juice, 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, 1 cup of the simple syrup from above.
Top with 10 thin orange slices, 6 thin apple slices, and 1 cup frozen cranberries, and spices from simple syrup. Serve over ice.
I truly hope that everyone on this Board has a safe and Merry Christmas! Thanks again for your year-round generosity!

quote:If you prepare the simple syrup a month or so in advance, more flavor will infuse and mellow. Pour it in an air tight container such as a mason jar and store in a pantry or cupboard. Remove the spices once the color darkens or you could start to extract bitter compounds. You'll get a better product this way.
