(TLDR notes at bottom)

I had to take some kids out to eat. I let them pick, and they picked Applebee's. Man I HATE that place, but the girls wanted it.

Anyway. No drinks at all until after the app hit the table. No silverware until after the food came out. (no napkins for the app at all had to take some from the bar) The server was never around. No refills when we ran low. The sides were wrong on two dishes. And she brought the kids deserts out one after the other. You always bring food out together. Especially with two competitive kindergarteners.

So I told a manager our qualms. Wasn't upset at all. I told my g/f that I was going to just give her 15% which is what I give for bad service. 10% for shite service. Being it was bad, but not shite, so she still deserved 15% (Even though she asked me "why don't you look happy) It's not a place you go for great service.

Anyway bill comes..

18% added to the bill.

We only had two adults and two kids. That's two guests, the check said two guests. Why charge me 18%.

I feel for the Preacher who stiffed the server now.
It was the principle of the matter.

Just crappy. I hate being forced to pay a tip. Especially when service was bad.

TLDR people

went to crap chain, got rally bad service, wanted to tip 15% but was forced to tip 18%

Feel its wrong to force one to tip

Should have brought it up with a manager, generally the rule is either 5 or 8, but all the places I've worked at have counted kids except one.

Applebee's I guess does it bc of the "clientele" that comes in and tries to protect their servers

Eta: bad service blows, sorry

It was all principle. I hate being forced to pay for a service. Especially when the service was shite.

I tip good, I worked back and front of the house in college. Serving can be hell. But again I hate being forced.

The difference was probably only a dollar fifty. Its the principle. I didn't complain to the manager, I didn't say anything. I just go to my anonymous message board and rant like everybody else.

Mail them the tip in a tampered-with box but really only mail them crumpled up newspapers... WIN!

If the restaurant has a policy like 8 or more and you are under that then yea you can get that removed, if your party fits the policy you are fricked because the manager will then side with the server every time.

I get that, I saw that. In there for sure.

A lot of people from the neighbor to our north.,

(and to the guy who said #poorpeopleproblems)

Go check my review on Seridipity on Friday and Cochon yesterday. That's nearly $300 in dining out, I eat out way more than average.

Kid's don't like high end places, they want crayons, spin dip and chicken fingers. Can't get that at Commander's

It was only like $1.50 difference. I don't know if they make everyone auto-tip or she saw me get up and get my silverware from the bartender, and then go back to the bartender for a refill. Maybe she thought I was going to stiff.

Never that. No biggie. I talked the girls into Katie's next time we go out. So hopefully they like it. I hate chains. Hate them.

Heck the check said "number of guests:2"
The kids (5 and 6) made four.

It wasn't a lot of money so I didn't say anything. My card was already charged. Just signed it, and left.

It's not a money issue, just I FEEL it's wrong to auto-grat a small party.

I honestly would have done the same thing...I have to say, that policy sounds so strange that I would have to do a little digging...why not send a complaint to corporate and see what comes back?...they at least need to know that you are unhappy...

ETA: here ya go... Applebees

As bad as your service was maybe the auto gratuity was a mistake by the server. Guess we will never know since you didn't ask the restaurant manager.

The first serving job I ever had in a restaurant was at Applebees. I can tell you that there should not have been a gratuity of 18% added for 2 adults and 2 kids. It's only when there are 8 or more guests that gratuity is added automatically by the computer (the server has to enter in the number of people in a party in order to start a new check). It's also a suggested gratuity, not something you are required to pay. If your service was that bad, and I agree it was bad, you should call up there tomorrow and complain. They will take care of it for you.

I wasn't given an option.

It was amount, then tip. The tip wasn't on the check.

The check was like $45. But then after she scanned the card, she came back with the receipt to sign. On it it had the amount. Then the $8.56 tip already on it. A line for an additional tip. Then the signature line. I just signed it and left.

Dumbly I didn't keep my receipt. I left the copy on the table too.

It was just a few bucks. It's been years since I've been to Applebee's. I just let a six year old pick, that was her pick.

even when the card runs and you see that gratuity on the check that you sign, you still are not required to pay it.. An original check with gratuity will say something like "For your convenience an optional 18% gratuity has been added to your check". It sounds to me like she printed your check without gratuity and then added it before she ran the card. They can pull up your receipt pretty easily, you don't have to have one.. I would complain because if he or she did that to you, then they probably do that to other tables as well.
