AB lowers quality and sees sales drop / going year round on Bourbon County Stout

It all jibes with Anheuser-Busch's intense and aggressive focus on profit at all costs. Here are some of the moves made by CEO Carlos Brito to shore up profits, according to Bloomberg Businesweek:

Shifted the brewing of Beck's from Germany to St. Louis, alienating fans who said the taste was weakened.
•Laid off 1,400 people, or 6% of its American workers.
•Sold the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens theme parks.
•Made its labels smaller, the glass in its bottles thinner and cardboard packaging weaker.
Used broken rice instead of whole grains in its beer, something previous management would not do.
•Cut the number of employee BlackBerry phones and told execs to start flying commercial.
Cut purchases of high-quality hops, like those from Germany's Hallertau region, in favor of cheaper hops.

One of my nieghbors in STL retired from AB a few years back, and he was getting pretty disgusted with the product right after they were bought out by Ferreners from across the pond.

Coincidentally I had another article about Bud go up today on ACB. After my good for them style article last week I felt the need to bury them a little this week. Probably wasn't harsh enough. Hopefully that will be the last time I write an article about Bud.

I'm not so sure. Don't get me wrong it would be great to get my hands on this beer. But I think one of the things that makes it really popular is its difficulty to find. Same thing with Founders KBS, which I have had up against their Regular Breakfast Stout which I kind of thought was better.

i have heard that KBS can be a bit boozy, but i wonder how they would compare with some aging on the KBS. Breatfast Stout is really nice, but I might like Terrapin WnB the same or even a little more

Not saying that it is not a great beer at all. And by no means am I comparing these two beers quality wise in this example. However look at Abita's Strawberry as an example of what I mean. They made very little of it and everyone wanted it, so they made more and still sold out in a week. Next year up'd output again, same with the following year. Now that beer is still around 6 months after it is released and they end up having to throw it away. Because people grabbed it up when it was sacred but now that it is more readily available people didn't slobber over it as much. (I feel I may have lost the train of thought at the end there)

you are correct. you can't flood the market with a product. abita totally overestimated the market. the key is creating enough product to meet the demand. heck, you can release a product like BCS one week a quarter and still keep the demand up

That's exactly what I was thinking... but they also went to strawberry extract to release it sooner and take the harvest somewhat out of the equation.

Still though, they made too much and people already had their fill.

I think Goose Island could probably quadruple their Bourbon County Stout production and there still would be a demand for it, but at some point it will hit an equilibrium.

Don't get me wrong, I will obviously buy a bunch of it if given the opportunity.

I also really like things being local and staying that way. I would almost prefer them to make more but keep it in Chicago, so that I have something to look forward to if I go to Chicago.

Completely agree with this. Especially now that LA is getting more local options. Half the fun of traveling for me is trying local beers.

That was going to be my second article for ACB this week if I can churn that out today. Local beers vs big national brands that you cannot get at home. i.e. going to houston and buying Dogfish.

I had one the other night. It is tasty, worth 10 dollars once. After that probably won't buy it again.

I don't mean regional breweries distributing, and I certainly don't want breweries to stop sending their beer where they can sell it. What I am talking about is that when you go to Houston I like buying Karbach, Jester King, Real Ale, other TX breweries bc it shows the beer culture of the state and the people. That being said one of my buddies just picked me up a bomber of Alaskan Smoked Porter from Tx.

Having these conversations on TD is difficult because I think faster than I type and get tired of typing. Obviously Dogfish is not local, which is what I meant. I was saying that you should not go to Houston and buy Dogfish but rather one of the local TX options.
