Stupid Question re: RIVER FLOODING

What is the cause behind it? I have a job that requires me to miss current events for weeks at a time sometimes so pardon the question. Is it the obnoxious amount of rain up north? Was Al Gore right? TIA

Again, missed the unveiling of this new board. Wouldn't expect any other answers.

Mississippi River rises in the spring every year. Some years more than others and this year happens to be an exceptional year.
It was a good year for snowfall in a number of places and this snow melt happen to occurr with a lot of rainfall.
The Mississippi River drainage system is very vast and I believe the 3rd or 4th largest in the world.
Below is a picture of the drainage area. All that snow melt out west, central, and up north all funnels down to the Mississippi.
