Of my uncles who flew B-17's, one died on a mission over Germany. One completed his tour as a pilot, but passed on 20 yrs ago after serving in SAC for years post-WWII.

Looked like it could be a shadow, but doesn't color out that way. Perhaps shadow and/or something he's holding, or a damaged area on the photo (would need to reconstruct webbing in that case).

the shadow on the other hand is cast down and to the left side (left side facing the picture). Because of that I think it should be the same color as the straps on the chute. If there was a shadow it should have been cast at the same angle/direction at the other, so it was probably blocked by his arm.
