Making .gifs

I want to give it a shot, but I'm pretty sure I cant do it with Photoshop Elements. What are you guys using?

I am a GIMP, GIMP Gap type of guy. I believe Rattlehead and Freek are both Shop guys. I don't know if animated .gif's with elements has been addressed in the "teach a man to fish" thread but I recommend reading through it. Post your question there and someone will give you an answer.

I use an old version of Adobe ImageReady.
I think you can do some animation stuff in PSE. What version are you using?

I use After Effects CS5, Mocha Pro, and PS CS5.

I just bought* Photoshop cs3 and I'm slowly figuring it out. Before, I used Paint.net and had free GIF making software where you could load the pictures into each frame. It was so much work that I never finished any of them (which looked horrible anyways) 
I'm sure there are instructions on how to do it (if you can), I just google it whenever I have a question.

ImageReady seems to be the best program I have in my suite for .gif manipulation.
A lot of people seem to use GIMP because it's free, but I've honestly never even seen the interface.
When using ImageReady, you may have to work between PS and IR simultaneously.

I was able to look as PSE. It looks like you can save as a GIF and each layer becomes a frame. To do this you need to Save For Web and then click the Animate checkbox.
This would make doing more complex animations a pain in the arse. You would have to combine layers to make a single layer for each frame. In IR, you can set any combination of layers for each frame without having to combine.
Let me know if that makes sense. You can also Google "Photoshop Elements Animated GIF" and find some tutorials.

Great point Envy. I usually do my cleanup, transparency and basic layer work in Ps and then pull everything into IR to do the animation work.

I've always used PhotoImpactX3. Have Photoshop, but tend to use that because I find it easier and more fun. It has a very easy to use .GIF Animator. It's older, but pretty easy to use. Can be gotten as a stand alone.
Guess you could argue .gifs are dinosaurs anyway. Guess "the pros" use programs like Flash CS for animation.

Last night I downloaded ULead GIF Animator. I had to work between it and photoshop but I managed to make a decent one for that Dirk Nowitzki thread. I saved the youtube video in GIFSoup and opened it in ULead where it let me edit each frame copying and pasting from photoshop.
I'd like to know what everyone does as well, that seems like a pretty inefficient way to do it. I have gimp but I haven't really taken the time to look into it. Just never been a fan of the way it works.
