Hello Farkers,
I want to start enhancing photos and manipulating images but don't know where to start. Is there a program that is inexpensive that I could get a beginner's level of performance out of? Photoshop just seems a bit much for something that I don't even know how to use yet. All help is appreciated.

There was a write up about this under the classic fark sticky, but it looks like its down now.
Gimp is great and about as close to photoshop as you will get without forking out big bucks. I think I am one of the only ones on this board that uses a program called Paint.net. I really enjoy it b/c of how easy it was to learn. Also it has a lot more online support and discussion threads than gimp. there are several "plug-ins" (user created add ons) that are fun to download and add to the existing program. You can easily create near photoshop quality pictures within weeks of downloading if you play around on it enough. I prefer it to Gimp IMO.

Paint.net = tha shite
the silver lining of paint.net is in all of the plug-ins available via their community forums.
Very easy-to-use program
