OK, the only thing I use is GIMP (it was free!).
What is it exactly you're trying to do? (make the entire image somewhat see-through?, make just the purple and gold parts transparent?, or just get rid of the white on the outside?...)

Hide the white from the outside of the image... (where I can put it over a black image & it won't look terrible)
Thank you sir for trying to help my noob self

No problem (I'm still a little new myself).
If you don't mind posting your e-mail address, I'll knock it out for you and send it to you as a PNG file, which will be only the tiger head without the white around it. You should be able to copy that and paste it over the other image you want it on.
Or, post the other image and I'll slap it on there for you....

paint.net
Pretty easy with this program. Open image in Paint.net. Using the magic wand, click somewhere around the white border. It should select all the white. Click delete. A checkboard background will now be visible. That means there are no pixels there. You must now save it as a PNG. A JPEG converts transparent pixels to solid white.

You can also save as a GIF. You may have to specify if you want it to use transparency or not.
