It would have been 3rd down. The first down play ended with 2:17 on the clock. If they had called a timeout after that play it would have been 3rd down with 2 minutes left.
Maybe I'm mistaken and they actually got the first down on that play instead of that play being the first down play?
Eta: I just caught the highlight, I was wrong. They picked up the first down on the play I was talking about, I was thinking that was first down. So y'all are right. I knew I was missing something.

Correct. It is better to take the TO before the 2min warning tho except when it’s under 2:10 or so. You can’t give the offense a free pass play attempt.

That's what I was telling myself must have been the reason. But I was misremembering anyways.
Fwiw, when typing out misremembering my phone autocorrected it to moistening. Just thought that was funny.
