I sort of regret what I did. I tried to do both. Playing for now and the future (skal, Jamal Murray)

He picked Ben Simmons in the first round, it's pretty clear he's building for the future. More than one way to approach dynasty leagues
 KAT is only two years older than simmons. DRussell is three MONTHS older. hell even kelly oubre is only 22.
porzingis went two spots later and is only a year older.
can we just call it what it is and say that simmons was a TERRIBLE pick in the first?

He's got to develop a shot. He won't crack the top 50 with that FT% and no 3s

I think it was terrible seeing as he likely would have been available in the 2nd when it made it back to him.
But if you want to make sure you get your target you have to reach a little.
Clearly DJ30 targeted being bad at this.

if you're in a dynasty, wouldn't you rank the following attributes
1) youth/upside and likelihood of reaching same
2) performance right now/years away from realizing potential
3) number of years away from decline
4) positional/categorical rarity or elite
so that said, the best players to start a franchise are those young, already performing at a peak level, with more room to grow.
so that would be KAT and Giannis who went 1-2. four out of four attributes.
the next group would be older players who are at the beginning of their peak curve (harden, westbrook, durant, curry). three out of four attributes
then the next would be the elites on the backside of their curve.
then the next would be young performers with limited upside.
my point is that ben simmons where he was picked, was picked ahead of kristaps. someone who is playing better now and will all season, arguably has more upside, and who is only negligibly older than simmons.

oh yeah he's got work to do
but
he's a rookie. and 21
he's averaging a double double (i know. 3 games) with 6 assists per game. greatest 1st round pick ever? no. terrible? hell no

exactly. simmons is not a bad pick in a vacuum. it's where he was picked and who was available. i would have had no problem taking him in the 2nd or 3rd.
but it was gambling/reaching.
also understandable given the LSU homerism/favoritism on this board. got to get who you want.

6 games difference + an unexpectedly horrible FG% week
lavine and curry haven't played yet and DSJ missed 2/3 games this week

None of us had the option to draft giannis so forgive us if we aren't wowed by you doing so

man, johnny jones was a terrible basketball coach. tim quarterman was a head case. and simmons to his credit IS actually a PG. and everyone was mad he wouldn't go to the block.
i actually love ben simmons. will always root for him. i think people think i don't like him, because i'm hedging on his upside. i think he's going to be a top 25 player in the league. maybe a few time all star. i just don't think he'll ever be all nba.
and if that's his upside, and he's a terrible ft shooting, 3 point shooting i just don't see taking him in the first.
