Although I like the idea of keepers, I don't like keepers in practice.
Auctions are probably worse for keepers as well. 1/4 of everyone's roster will be $1 players. If you hit on an OBJ for $1, you get the keep him for $1 next year?
Keepers work best in snakes IMO and with that a keeper should be your 1st round pick. Drafted AB in the 2nd round last year? Keep him as your #1 pick. Anything other than that is bordering on dynasty type league.

ETA: as far as keepers go, I have no idea how we would do it. Although, I have no experience with any type of keeper league so take it fwiw

He is my keeper in the 13th in my other league and I did trade a kicker for him in this league. Yep, I am what you want to be.
