I play in best ball leagues where highest points are rewarded, but typically not lineup setting leagues.

Is best ball weekly fantasy, and lineup setting is season long?

Best ball are season long leagues with no roster management, no waivers claims, and no trades. Draft 20 players, and team is managed on “auto-pilot”. The highest roster scorers each week (QB, 2 RB, 2-3 WR, TE, FLEX, DEF.) make your starting lineup automatically (no lineup setting). Balancing depth, upside, and bye weeks is important during draft since no in season management allowed.
Best ball leagues are typically a points league (weeks 1-16) with no playoffs.

Gotcha. Thanks for the detail. I kinda like that whole no playoff thing, minus the no roster management, waivers and trades.
I just think that highest total season points/avg points per game should be fairly rewarded in all leagues after the final week of play. And by fairly rewarded I mean at the very least, 2.5x the buy in. Points is literally the best metric to determine who the actual best teams are in fantasy sports. A playoff in fantasy sports is just too damn random for my liking, and it doesn't truly decide who the best team is from each season. At the end of the season I would much rather see the best teams rewarded over the luckiest ones.
If after 16 weeks, your team has scored more total points than every other team in the league, and you walk away with $0, then it's time for your league to reevaluate its format and payout structure. Unless of course you just accept the notion that the best teams don't always win money in fantasy sports. I say frick THAT, especially when we all have the ability to make slight adjustments to the payout structure that will very easily solve this issue.

For lineup setting leagues, total points doesn’t really tell the whole story.
Sometimes total points is a team who scored 180% of the weekly median in three weeks, but was only mediocre or slightly above average the rest of the season.
TOP 6/BOTTOM 6 reduces a lot of the matchup “luck” issues.
If TOP 6/BOTTOM 6 is being used, best overall record actually is a better barometer of “best fantasy team” than total points.

99.9999% of the time, the team that scores the most total points after 16 weeks of play is THE best team and will likely also have the best t6b6 record.
But at least we can agree that a playoff does not determine the “best fantasy team."
All that is is a random crapshoot.

Well the Super Bowl determines the “best NFL team”, just not the team with the best season record.
I was primarily offering that the team that consistently scores the top 6 highest points each week is a better fantasy team in lineup setting league formats than a team that has three really high scoring weeks (with mediocre other weeks), but has the season “highest score by far”.
Edit: if scoring the most points or having the best record is the goal, one would have to significantly reduce the value in drafting high upside players that are suspended or injured to start the season.

Correct
That’s the whole point of the format. Most consistent team

Well a playoff does not determine the actual best team in fantasy football. The NFL is a physical sport where grown men battle to prevent the other teams from scoring points. If you and I face off in the fantasy championship, you can’t do shite to stop my team from scoring points. Everything in fantasy is based on points.
But yes, I’d much rather see 16 week t6b6 records used to determine significant payouts in a t6b6 league vs a random playoff. Or if it’s a legit h2h league scenario like the OP described then it makes more sense to use total points.
Edit: I’m just saying you can have a playoff and still find a way to fairly reward the actual best teams, whatever metric you want to use to determine that.
