Rafael Soriano open to setup job with Yanks
Rafael Soriano is open to serving as a setup man on the Yankees, his agent Scott Boras told ESPN New York on Thursday.

Soriano would still prefer to act as a closer, but the Yanks can have him if the money is right. "I don't think there is a team in baseball where he could be asked to be a setup guy other than the Yankees," Boras said. "There is also a value in playing with Mariano Rivera." Soriano has drawn interest recently from the White Sox and others, but he is maintaining a lofty asking price.

Renteria is Cincy-bound

Edgar Renteria, SS SF
News: Free agent SS Edgar Renteria will sign a one-year deal with the Reds, according to ESPN.com. The 2010 World Series MVP could reportedly earn approximately $3 million including incentives. Renteria hit .276 in 243 at-bats with San Francisco last season.
Analysis: Renteria was relegated to a utility role for much of the regular season last year, but he could potentially challenge Paul Janish for playing time at shortstop in Cincinnati. Even with semi-regular at-bats, Renteria has lost enough of his offensive value to be irrelevant in most mixed league formats.

That is a decent top 10, but I think he values position scarcity too much.

Maybe in the ESPN format where they value batting average.

if he stole bases, I'd say Cano could be placed 4th. The only reason Ramirez is so valuable is because he steals bases, otherwise he wouldnt be 2nd. It's pretty much a contradiction having Cano 4th. and I love Cano, but that is the truth.

quote:

There are seven, perhaps eight, second basemen worthy of top-100 status -- it's not a deep position -- and most of them bring injury concerns. Cano does not.

And i dont see this as a reason to grab him early. In a 10 or 12 team standard league like most ESPN leagues, there are plenty enough 2B to get a good one. Its probably the deepest 2B has ever been as far as offensive production in recent MLB history.

Matt Garza-S-Rays Jan. 7 - 10:30 am et

Bruce Miles of the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports that the Cubs are nearing a trade for Rays right-hander Matt Garza.

Miles says that the Cubs will send prospects Chris Archer, Hak-Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer and Robinson Chirinos to the Rays in return if the deal is completed. An announcement is not imminent just yet because physicals still need to be taken and negotiations may still be taking place, but "that is the package," according to the Daily Herald. Garza, 27, finished with a 15-10 record, 3.91 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 204 2/3 innings this year in the American League East. He would do quite well with a move to the National League Central, though the Cubs are basically depleting their farm system to land him.

Looks like its back on.

Looks like a done deal

quote:

According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago, the Cubs and Rays have agreed to an eight-player trade involving right-hander Matt Garza.

Here's how Levine has the trade going down: The Rays will get top pitching prospect Chris Archer, outfielder Brandon Guyer, catcher Robinson Chirinos, shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and outfielder Sam Fuld from Chicago. The Cubs will get a minor-league pitcher and a minor-league outfielder, along with Garza, from the Rays. Garza, a 27-year-old righty, registered a strong 3.91 ERA and 1.25 WHIP last season in the AL East. He will immediately become the Cubs' No. 2 starter and should do very well in the National League Central.
