I’m aware of the the inferno and the divine comedy, but have never read either.

Which one should I start with?

TIA

Inferno is 1/3 of the Divine Comedy.

Inferno is also the book of the three most easily appreciated by an average reader. Get a translation with good notes, or you will miss a lot, unless you are an expert on early medieval Florentine politics, Greek mythology, and medieval theology.

I have read and recommend the Musa translation, but I know that there are others that are also good.

Thank you, I started it as an audio book, the prose is beautiful, but as you suggest I need the notes to go with it.

Musa’s translation is the one used and recommended by the Great Courses (now part of Wonderium) team taught course covering The Divine Comedy.

The same team also teach one on Saint Augustine’s Confessions.
One’s a historian and one’s a literature professor.

I appreciated their objective handling of the materials and context.
