Definitely. It probably stems from the fact that USC's reign was shorter-lived and they were never in the title chase without winning their conference, not to mention their generally more exciting playstyle.

This doesn't make sense to me. The popularity timeframe is when they are in high school?

1985-1995 was the shite.
The U, USC was still in the mix being ranked #1, Notre Dame came back to stardom, FSU was rolling, Washington was huge, Bama came back, Penn State finally won it's first Natty, Nebraska was huge, Colorado.
It was a truly National landscape of teams and not just centered on a few teams or region.
Late 80's to early 90's was an apex for a sport that wants to appeal to all fanbases across the country.

That's around when most people become fans of the sport as a whole, not just the team they support.
