No news on Doors of Stone at all.
He's going to read a new story about 4 students at The Arcanum on a podcast in multiple parts. Based on a role playing game he is developing.

He's going to read a new story about 4 students at The Arcanum on a podcast in multiple parts. Based on a role playing game he is developing.

In the podcast’s announcement, Rothfuss explains that this project goes back to the original roots of Temerant, in that he cut his teeth with roleplaying games.
“Telling stories like this will give me a chance to show off corners of my world that don’t appear in my novels, and it’s playful and collaborative in a way that I really miss. Most importantly, these are stories that will let people spend time in my world sooner rather than later, while they’re waiting for the next book to come out.”

Dude is a total headcase.
I don't want to give up on it because Name of the Wind is so damn good and I like the world and characters, but its going to be 10 years since book 2 soon.

still haven't read it yet. I got pretty burnt out on people not finishing series and swore off any further martin or further unfinished series from unreliable authors.
I'm ok with Sanderson series that aren't finished for obvious reasons.
Lynch i broke my rule with, but his books were largely stand-alone and contained stories so I felt good about them.

Sanderson is just out of this world with his productivity. In the last 15 years, he has written 11 novels set in his Cosmere universe. This doesn't include the various novellas and comics etc. He's also working on the Mistborn screenplay and the 4th Stomlight book will be out this fall.
Then there are the 15 or so non Cosmere novels including the last 3 Wheel of Time books in the same time period.
Even more impressive is that he's been teaching a Fantasy/Sci-Fi writing class at BYU this entire time.
He posted this year's lectures to Youtube. Even though I have no writing ability at all; the lectures are very informative and entertaining. I highly recommend checking them out.
I have no idea what Rothfuss and GRRM are doing with their time.

Ya i've watched those and listen to his writing excuses podcast - i've got a story idea i've been working on for about a year now.
His productivity is out of this world and I enjoy all his books, but the Wax and Wayne ones are the only ones I feel like he really nailed for me. I feel like the Stormlight books could have been tightened up a bit - although I did really, really enjoy Words of Radiance from start to finish, Oathbringer was a bit of a slog for me. I'll probably wait to read Rhythym of War until book 5 comes out.
This is apparently somewhat common - I think it was a talk with him and Christopher Paolini where he mentioned a few different authors that do this at local colleges.
Brandon being a mormon who doesn't drink or anything seems to be working well for his output. Plus he has has had an incredible drive to write his whole life and wrote his first novels in high school I think.
Another thing about his process is tons of Beta readers with a big team working behind him. So he finishes his draft, does his initial revisions for another draft or two, and then at some point gives it out to like 100 people from his team, the cosmere fan club or whatever and gets all those comments. His team goes back and sort of groups the comments so he knows what to attack first and all if stuff wasn't working for his fans.
From his talks it seems like he really hates the whole editing process and really just wants to get on to the next new novel as soon as he finishes a draft or two.

Have you read Warbreaker and the Reckoners trilogy? Those are the only ones besides wax and Wayne by him that I felt like he nailed it. Not as good as wax and wayne but very strong.

My guess is they write for money, and at some point, you've made enough money.
GRRM has a net worth of $65 million. I don't think ASOIF was his masterpiece or his life's work or the capstone to his career. I think it was paying the bills, and then GOT paid all the rest of the bills he'll have for the rest of his life, ergo there is no need to untie the Gordian knots of ASOIF at all, let alone in a sufficiently pleasing way to his fans.
Rothfuss has earned much less (maybe $3-4 million) but maybe the income line he needed to cross was much shorter than GRRM.
