When it comes to unemployment eligibility for an employee/employer?

Furlough or layoff will generally result in unemployment benefits because it is a result of a slowdown or lack of work...

Terminated for cause in most States means you might not be eligible for benefits...

Furlough = "We don't have work for you now - you're on unpaid vacation."

Terminated = Either "We will never have work for you again" OR "You are an unsatisfactory worker for us at your hired position or, really, any position. You are the weakest link. Goodbye."

Either category makes you eligible for U/E, unless your employer makes a case for "unsatisfactory" ("For Cause").

Got it?

to do that to an employee this week would be "ok.... did you knock the bosses wife up?"

Furloughed employees are eligible for unemployment benefits. Employers are also able to continue your benefits for another 90 days if they elect to.

My generic categorization

Furlough - No work now, however we want you back when work returns. Can receive unemployment

Lay-off - No work, job is gone. Can receive unemployment.

Terminated - You suck and no unemployment for you.

If you specified Terminated (for cause) - I would probably just ditch mine and adopt yours.

Nice work.

This, but add that employers will continue to carry your benefits if you are Furloughed. You're on your own if you are laid off or terminated.

“Nothing more permanent than a temporary layoff.”
