I would definitely road trip it and not return to the same place.

I already have a place booked in GJ. That's not changing.

Driving out west is fun for a day or two, but its going to get old very quick.

Doesn't get old to me. I love it. To each his own.

It also gives you a lot less time to mope around the small towns around there.

ehh, I don't have really care to spend a lot of time moping around small towns.

I get what you are all saying, but I think that basing in GJ will be just fine considering where we are trying to go.

You'll have a great time no matter where you stay out there.

The drive through Montrose and Delta is flat with farmland, that will be the bulk of your drive from San Juans and Black Canyon. Not great but could be worse.

You are about 3 hrs to Aspen if that floats your boat.

Highly recommend Colorado Monument in GJ.

Kannah Creek Brewing in GJ is good and Hot Tomato Pizza in Fruita is the second best pizza in the state, the best is Brown Dog in Telluride.

I was in Grand Junction last week for work. My only advice is to spend as little time in Grand Junction as possible.

I've never been to Aspen, so that might happen.

Definitely going to check that out.

Awesome, thanks for the recs.

I suppose that if I could re-plan, I'd do it differently, and stay in different places each night, but I'm mainly going out there to take my parents, and their minds will be blown either way.

Grand Junction isn't that bad. But to your point, we won't be spending a ton of day time in GJ.

Glenwood Springs is on the way along I-70. They have the hot springs pool and the Hanging Lake hike.

I've been on the single person roller coaster thing they have on the mountain, but have never been to hanging lakes. Will keep that option open.

Just keep in mind they have implemented a permit system.

Hot Tomato is great.

Also, if you’re grabbing lunch/dinner in GJ, I recommend the burger at bin 707 foodbar.

Trip was a blast. Went off without a hitch, and my parents were blown away.

Hiked around the Bangs Canyon Mica Mine trail the first day we were in GJ(half day.)

Went to Arches and Canyonlands on Monday.

We drove down to Telluride on Tuesday. Brown Dog pizza was really good.

My GF had to fly back on Wednesday, so we went to a dispensary, brewery, and a couple of wineries in Palisade until we dropped her off at the airport. After sobering up some, we drive into Colorado National Monument and hiked around there a little bit.

On Thursday we headed back east towards Denver, but went through Aspen, Independence Pass, and Leadville instead of taking 70 the whole way back. Great decision, as it was one of the most spectacular drives I've ever been on. The leaves had started to change, and they painting the mountains and creeks beautifully. We stopped pretty frequently to hike and take it all in.

Stopped in Frisco to drink a beer at Outer Range. Love that place.

We stayed in Nederland the last 2 nights. Great little town.

On Friday we hiked around Brainard Lake, in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. My parents hiked around Long Lake, and I hiked up to Lake Isabelle. One of the bluest, most pristine lakes I've ever seen. Gorgeous scenery.

We got some late lunch in Boulder afterwards, and spent the rest of the day/night walking around Nederland. Knotted Root is a good brewery there. Great beer. Very heady place.

All in all, it was an epic trip by my measure. Here are a few pics:
