May be spending a few days in Hamburg for a work trip a few months out. Never been to Germany nor do I speak German.

Things to do for a tourist?
Where to stay?
General suggestions or comments?

Learn the basic expressions like Hi, thank you, good morning, and you are good to go. Everyone will speak English in the city, I mean basically everyone. Except maybe non Germans lol.

German good is very underrated, especially if you like heavy food. Great pastries, desserts, etc.

I would highly recommend extending your stay a day or 3 if possible. I don’t have any Hamburg recs but it will be easy to have a good time.

Hamburg is a cool town. Probably my favorite German city to live and work in.
Great restaurants... International, seafood, German, Italian, Argentinian, etc.
A harbor tour is good to do.
Visit the Elbphilharmonie for a drink in the evening.
St. Nikolai church is a good monument to the WWII bombings and had a good view from the top. Quite a moving museum at the bottom.
Reeperbahn area is the red light district, but it's also a good area for Bates and clubs.
Walk asking the water and eat some Matjesfilet brotchen (herring sandwich with onions and pickles).

Enjoy!

Bitte!
Also, in Hamburg, the normal greeting isn't the typical "guten Morgen". They say "Moin" which they say all day despite it being short for "Morgen". If you're in a really good mood you would say "Moin Moin"!
Most important phrases:
Danke
Bitte
Entschuldigen
Moin
Genau
Zwei Bier bitte
Mein Luftkissenfahrzeug is voller Aale

Guten Reisen!

This has gotten me laid and fed and drunk for free in Deutschland.

Prost!

All good words to know. I would add a couple more.

Tschüss- informal goodbye. Probably what you will hear most often.
Auf Wiedersehen- formal goodbye. Best in a professional setting like work
Straße- Street
Bahnhof- train station.
Ich verstehe kein Deutsch- I don’t understand German
Ich verstehe nicht- i don’t understand
Ich habe keine Ahnung- i have no idea.(one of my
personal favs)
Alles hat ein Ende nur die Wurst hat zwei.
