Will be doing this in a few weeks, and despite the train costing more and taking 5.5 hours as opposed to a 1.5 hour plane ride (Obviously not factoring in getting to airport ahead of time and security and all that)....

Almost everyone recs taking the train, which I have done a bunch in Europe.

Anyone ever taken this route? Was it a direct AVE or did it connect in Madrid?

I've driven it, taking the scenic route, which was awesome but probably not an option if you don't have time.

If time is an issue I'll always opt for the quicker route, unless it's either significantly more expensive, or if the long route is supposed to be part of the "experience". You can't get that time back and who knows when you'll be there again.

I’ve taken the AVE on that route. You can go direct to Seville and bypass Madrid. For some reason I imagined it was non stop, but you actually stop several times along the way to let people on and off. The train is comfortable and there is a cafeteria car with decent food & wine.

There was a thread on Vueling a few weeks ago and everyone, including myself, had no problems with them. I flew them twice and it was all good. Just make sure you understand their baggage fees/ size limits.
