Getting ACL surgery today.

Just got my nerve block and feeling less nervous for some reason. Lady across the hall was making some intitimadating sounds when she got hers (I got a femoral, it didn't hurt) Will post major events today if I can and more detail later if I remember and generate interest.

Mmm....leg is warm.

Wish me luck!

Update:

Heading home now.

My leg hurts ?? Got a little bag of pain killer stuff to take with me. It's somehow pressure fed into the femoral where they did the nerve block. No idea if it's working. I noticed no difference in pain when they hooked it up.

Sending the wife to get the Percocet once we're home then hopefully it's nap time.

End of day zero.

Surgery was at 7. In PACU from 9-10. Home by 11:30. He did an ACL recon using a donor tendon, meniscus tear repair (I was shocked I still have a meniscus in that knee), and something about a micro fracture that I didn't understand.

Accidentally pulled out my catheter in the femoral earlier today so I lost my steady med drip. Found out because I woke up from a nap and the wife was yelling at me that I pissed my pants ha. Was just the meds. Pain has been pretty steady throughout the day, with some periods of intense pain but mostly moderate.

Doc has me on Percocet, aspirin, stool softener, and a nausea pill.

Starting PT at noon tomorrow.

5:30 PM Day 1

Finished PT a few hours ago. Absolutely miserable.

They took my straight brace and all the dressing off. Did heel slides, straight leg raises, some calf extension things. About a two hour session. Was able to get full extension (unusual) and ~45 degrees flexion. Afterwards wrapped in new bandages and gave me a new sports brace that bends. Absolute agony right now. Felt great throughout the day and through about the first half of PT, then it all started building up. Pain mostly around surgical site, by far the worst it's been since I woke up after the surgery. May be a combination of PT and the nerve block finally starting to wear off. It sucks

My CPM (knee bender thing) got delivered but I am not using that til this knee chills out a bit.

Week 1

Week one wasn't nearly as bad as after my first surgery, but still a bit of a roller coaster.

Pain was manageable but went through spurts of high intensity. I slept well every other night, kind of odd. Was able to reach complete (and negative) extension, but only got up to 70 degrees flexion. Still walking almost completely supported by crutches (maybe 10-15% weight bearing on repaired leg).

Week Two

Week two has been up and down, not dissimilar from week one.

Slowly making progress in all aspects. Extension suffered early in the week as swelling increased pretty significantly once I started doing more intense PT. Was able to get flexion up to ~75 degrees and put ~40% weight on the leg while standing (slightly less while walking). Most of the pain has been at the incisions rather than tightness in the knee/muscle/tensons.

Went in Thursday (10 days post op) to have my follow up and get the stitches taken out. Doc said everything is looking good and I can start working towards 100% weight bearing pretty quickly. Was optimistic until I went to PT immediately after. One of my incisions swelled up to the size of a golf ball and my knee was almost completely frozen. Rather than try to get to 90 degrees flexion and much heavier weight bearing, I spent the two hour session getting massaged and suction work just trying to get the knee moving again. Ugh. They say it's not an unusual 'setback'. Still frustrating.

Best (unsolicited) advice I can get is hit the rehab and hit it hard. Your quad will be absolutely shot from the nerve block. Also try to get off the pain killers asap and just take advil/ibuprofen. Thats a toughie, but after ACL surgery I know why people get addicted to them.

Best of luck.

this. the first few days at home you will need the pain killers because you have to get used to the terrain again, but then quit them as quick as possible. Pain is your body's way of warning you what is too much, and if you cant feel it then you're going to slow your recovery. good luck!

Appreciate that. Been using them pretty liberally (staying ahead of the pain?) but will try to cut back to only taking taking as needed soon. I've always been nervous about getting hooked.
