My wife just rented some office space and I’m trying to get her wireless network setup. The office building supplies the internet, they just told us to plug in a router (but not into the internet port because it can cause IP address issues, just one of the other cat 5 ports). I did that, and I’m not getting any internet access at all. Any ideas?

Have you tried plugging into the router's WAN port?

Which router?
Look up its default IP address, admin name, and password. Log in.
If there is a set of "modes," put it in WAP or wireless access point (or simply access point) mode.

If still nothing, under "wireless," there should be a way to "clone MAC (address)" from your computer to the router.

You can also try plugging into the WAN, but make sure you disable the DHCP server on your router in either case.

Sounds like you need a switch or a wireless access point and not a router. This will allow their router to assign ip addresses to your devices.

Typically the way you would do this with a router is to use the WAN port. I'm not sure why they said not to. Maybe they have a firewall setup, or their network is set to use the default ip address.

Access point would be easier to get working but be aware that you would be on their network and possible expose any data to someone else on the same network unless someone on their side set it up to allocate different subnets per the port plugged in. (Vlan)
