How do you use Global Entry?

Do you give your Global Entry# when getting your boarding tickets? Or Do you just scan your passport when entering the US?

If you enter your number when making a booking, it is far more likely that you will get TSA PreCheck (though not guaranteed).
Upon re-entering the country, GE allows you to use self-service kiosks at Customs: you answer the questions, scan your passport, and put your palm on the glass fingerprint scanner. The kiosk takes your photo & prints a paper receipt, which you hand to the CBP officer on the way out. IOW, you don’t stand in the long, snaking lines with everyone else. Though at some airports, there is more demand than there are kiosks, or kiosks are broken, etc. In any event, it’s still quite a bit faster at very busy airports than standing in line & talking to an officer.

If you put your GE # (Known Traveler Number) onto your frequent flyer account of every airline you fly the whole process is much easier and you don't need to remember to enter it since either will auto populate when you log in.
It's like 99.99999% you'll get Precheck if the airline participates.
Btw don't frick up and accidentally not declare something. Your GE can be taken away.

Well,
I bought my tickets(cheapoair) 2 months before I got my GE. Not sure what to do. I called cheapoair and they say present it when I'm getting my boarding passes at the airport. But global entry officer said to call the booking site. Conflicting info.

What airline issued the tickets? Use your confirmation number which is usually displayed on the booking document, log into the airline website, and click manage my booking (or similar verbiage). You might have purchased your ticket through cheapair, but you are flying Airline X. So you need to give Airline X your GE number and probably also your passport number. Having all that stuff in your booking makes life a little easier.

As far as I know, if your GE/Precheck number isn't in the airlines system before check-in starts (so more than 24 hours) you won't get Precheck.
I messed this up once because I thought I had my number with Delta and didn't get Precheck on the outbound on a Thursday/Friday but got it submitted in time for my Sunday return.
Furthermore, you may not get Precheck with GE on the first flight you take, but it should be virtually guaranteed after that.

I've called the airline on the way to the airport, had them put in my KTN. They can add it immediately.

We have our flights booked to Italy in October and I got the email last week that my Capital One Venture card now will reimburse any new GE or PreCheck fee.
Does anyone know how long of a process applying for GE takes from sign up/interview to having the status? I saw the PreCheck thread yesterday and it sounds like its within a week for PreCheck
Basically is it worth trying to get the status for our Italy trip or are we past the window?

You should have plenty of time. Doing the online app and getting "pre-verified" or whatever they call it is pretty easy. Scheduling the interview can be easy or take a couple of weeks, depending on where you need to interview. Mine took 3-4 weeks, IIRC. So you've got plenty of time to apply & be approved before an Oct trip.

Whoever downvoted me should know I’ve actually done it probably 10 times.

Venture is such a rip-off they had to add GE.

I finally got the "conditional approval" after exactly 3 weeks for GE. Scheduled an interview fora couple weeks from now. Hopefully it won't take long after that to get final approval.

Everyone I know was approved same day.

The interview is pretty much just getting your fingerprints. I received my approval when I was walking back to my car after the interview.

You need Global Entry to use the self-service kiosks if you’re an American?
I’ve always used those and have never signed up for Global Entry.

You must certainly be an American with Global Entry to use the GE kiosks.
It shouldn't even work if you're not. You may be using something else.
If somehow you used them, I'm pretty sure you've committed multiple crimes

I think he's referring to the other kiosks where it just prints out your questionnaire and directs you to a certain line. They then either scan it and you go on or the other line they ask a few questions. Nothing to do with GE. Have done this at a couple airports, but don't recall where.

Just applied
Sounds like according to this 3 weeks then airport interview.
My pre check interview was in Newark but not at airport.
