We will be driving through in 1 hour and are stopping for lunch. Want to eat some local down home country cooking.

What do you suggest?

Stop at Weidmann's Take 22nd Avenue exit off I20/59 and go north across train tracks a mile or so up 22nd Avenue. It is on the right one block past train yard bridge. For what it's worth, I have not lived in Meridian for last two years, but Weidmann's never fails to do well.

Any historical sites we should check out while we are here. Food has been ordered at Weidmann’s.

Thanks for the suggestion!

go to rose hill cemetery and see where the queen of gypsies (and family) is burried. people still come by there regularly and leave trinkets, coins, and orange crush cans

OP: so give us a review, please.

MD: thanks to my recent move back to BHM from BTR, I'll be making the up-and-down I-59 run a lot this year. My current fun-stop for the trip is the Farmer's Market buffet in Hattiesburg. Old-school, high-carb, buffet-house equally patronized by local rednecks and camo-clad folks from Camp Shelby. Bonus: they have fried chicken livers.

Might you have any any other along-the-route, but yet off-the-path suggestions?

Long's fish house in Enterprise (south of meridian) if you happen to be driving through in the evening. Probably a thurs-Sat. restaurant. Catfish is very good, hushpuppies are great, and slaw is perfect.

New's restaurant in Meridian serves the Double Good burger, and the coldest beer in town. If you're into unhealthy food, order the onion rings to go with it.

Jimmie Rodgers museum in Meridian, if you're into music. This place, if you're looking to burn some time - LINK
