The biography on him ‘4th Down & Forever’ is a great read.

He’s one of, if not THE all-time ‘what could have been’ football players. Arguably one of the most athletic football players of all time.

He drove Bud Wilkinson crazy at Oklahoma, Don Shula couldn’t deal with him when he was with the Colts, the Giants HC wanted to kill him. He played with the Saints too.

He would skip practice, make up injuries, etc. He clearly either had a mental illness, a chemical imbalance, or both. Plus he was an a-hole. He loved fighting and causing chaos.

Died in a motorcycle accident in rural Texas in the 80’s.

And the article I was talking about:

Looney was ahead of his time in some ways, especially when it came to training, an elaborate regimen centered around then-foreign endeavors like stretching and taking vitamins. An avid weightlifter, he journeyed to Alvin Roy’s gym in Baton Rouge in the summer of 1963. “Alvin Roy of course brought steroids into pro football in the early ’60s with the Chargers,” says MacCambridge.
