The sheriff made a point of saying last night that there was evidence that Paddock had planned on escaping and thus surviving. Paddock seemed to be a fairly smart guy which leads to this question: how in the hell did he think he was going to escape?

Maybe the original plan was to puncture the jet fuel tanks and set that off with a remote electronic device or have his help light it.

If done right, that would have only taken a couple shots and he could have gotten out of there while everyone stares at the fireball and burns alive.

through the chaos of the events...

maybe the hotel security man knocking on the door took his escape plan away. he assumed it would take a while to figure out where he was. one the guard knocked and he shot him, his fog of war on location was lifted.

edit:

thinking he would have gotten out is the reason for more guns and explosives in his house.

I find it hard to believe he only had a Plan A. Smart people usually have multiple plans. Now I'm not entirely disagreeing with your theory but for him to put all of his eggs in 1 basket doesn't make sense.
