Yes, you can.
I graduated in Petroleum Engineering several years ago, and didn't like any of the places I had a chance of working (South Texas, New Mexico, North Dakota). So I started working other jobs while continuing to apply for the job I wanted.
The owner at one of the places I worked got me in touch with a Mechanical Engineer friend of his, and the rest is history. Been doing ME work for 3 years, taking the PE in ME in April, will get my license next April, so long as I pass.
Funny how things work out in life. I'm certainly not regretting the path I was given.
