Thank you. I was quite sure of this, but I was't born for another 30 years so I couldn't 100% confirm.

"Johnny Vaught actually did punt on 1st down a few times in that game."
So who do we believe? I go with the actual witness, Chnese Bandit58! Just doesn't make sense on 1st down anyway
Well it's Ole Miss week why not!

In the 7th game of the season LSU faced its sternest test—undefeated Ole Miss on Halloween in Tiger Stadium. That game between No. 1 LSU and No. 3 Ole Miss was touted as 1959's "Game of the Year." Ole Miss held a 3–0 lead until the 4th quarter, often punting on first down due to the wet conditions on the field.

Peter Finney claims in his book "The Fighting Tigers" this happened as well.

Yes I referenced this quote from Wiki earlier, but the witness to it says never happened! Perhaps some other live witnesses could chime in?

The game was 54 years ago.
I can't remember every detail of last week's game. And that was just this past Saturday.

Well, I was there too, but only 9 years old, and I was from Jackson, Miss. We had been to the '58 game the year before but I don't remember it well. Being that young I don't recall all the particulars but we did sit on the east side about the south 20. The Ole Miss team bus pulled up near the north end and people were going crazy yelling at the players and beating on it. Charlie Flowers was the big time OM fullback that year and the signs read that a Cannon is stronger than a Flower, or something like that. Pretty exciting for a kid in the late '50s. There were several Rebel flags burned in the south end zone. The halftime show featured a huge birthday cake, it was LSU's 100th anniversary. And I remember the place going nuts when Billy C. made his run. What a game, that's when I became a life-long Tiger fan.

That Ole Miss team had 8 shutout in 11 games (including LSU the 2nd time around...reminds me of something). They only gave up 21 points all season (two other teams scored 7 points in blowout losses). No wonder they were bitter. LSU had similar stats too until Missy blanked them 21-0 in the Sugar. I'm not even close to being an old timer, but I just looked up the scores from that year out of interest hearing how good both teams were.
1959 and 2011 were eerily similar, except it involved Ole Miss instead of Alabama. Both times the Tigers squeaked out a close, low scoring win in the regular season, and both times they were beaten 21-0 in the Sugar Bowl at the end. I clearly remember watching that Sugar Bowl on TV and crying as it became obvious we would lose. I had a premonition that the 2012 Sugar Bowl would end the same way, and damn if it didn't, except for the crying.
