Defense wasn't good enough, not with or without Payton.
If Payton is here for the season, I don't think Spag's is hired. We may never know, but not having Payton sure showed, especially early on. We lost games we shouldn't have without him.

quote:Dude, we were the worst defense ever. On a 7-9 team. If anything, it is a miracle our offense got us to 7-9. Now, a couple of games are on the offense, but when you have to score 30 points every game to win, it's the defense. Detroit was 0-16 and theren't as bad as our defense was.
This is all conjecture, but I disagree. The performance of the defense is linked (not completely) to the performance of the offense. The entire team was effected by the suspensions and the loss of Payton.
ETA: With Payton at the helm there is no way our defense gives up 7000+ yards.

I never said the defense wasn't bad, but I've stated before that their numbers were inflated due to 1) the running game being non existent or predictable for a good portion of the year 2) uncharacteristic turnovers by the offense 3) serious pass protection issues 4) Shanle and Herring being your opening day starting linebackers.
We got Vilma and Hawthorne back and the defense improved a bit. It was still bad, but like Hoodoo Man stated earlier, you can't judge the defense in a vacuum. It's not as if the team splits up and goes to compete on different fields.

We got better, and then we would get worse again.
I just can't get over us making Cam Newton look like a HOFer. I fricking hate his guts.

That bad no fumble call seemed to take the wind out of our whole team. They seemed to just pack it in after that. They looked like they just wanted the season to be over with.
