Yes which is why even years those cards hold great resale value though the market will be flooded with them when ASIC is finally released.
There was also a 5xxx that many used and some still use.

Are people making a living off of mining these things? Or is it just a hobby?

Mostly hobby but there are a few with enough rigs built that they can make a living. Only now that the difficulty changes it might hurt those people because of power consumption and how long it takes now to mine a block.
The ASIC machines will chane the whole landscape if/when they are finally released.
