Chimney cleaning
Posted by Royalfisher on 11/22/22 at 6:02 pm

So we have a wood fireplace and burn clean seasoned oak probably 10-15 times a year. Standard fireplace insert and duct flu work. Do we really need a cleaning eatery year or is this a scam?

The experts recommend having it done each year but I don't think anyone actually does.

I bought my own chimney cleaning brush and do it myself. Brush, some cardboard and a shop vac, nothing to it...and you can do it from the heater and don't have to get on the roof.
If you have stainless steel flue pipe, make sure you or the person you hire is using the correct brush or it will damage the SS liner.

I heat my home with firewood and burn on average 4-5 cords of wood annually. Clean the chimney every 2-4 years.
DO NOT buy those cleaning logs. Waste of money and don’t work.

As long as you are burning clean seasoned oak like you said it really shouldn't need to be cleaned. It wouldn't hurt to do it every few years just to be safe. That being said, if you or a previous owner has ever used those bull shite cleaning or starter logs that come in the bags it will need to be cleaned.
