What type of paint and stain for wood project

Working on something where I'll be painting a design over stained wood surface. The wood underneath is all being stained one color, but the painted design will involve 3 different colors then a few coats of polyurethane afterwards.
Heard that some types of paint are better than others when it comes to having crisp, clear lines while other types of paint will soak into the wood and bleed, causing a blurred looking edge.
Recommendation on what type of paint to use for getting nice crisp lines?

You could try putting a layer or two of polyurethane down first and then painting and doing more polyurethane

So stain it first, then poly, then paint followed by poly again? Its a table top surface so just making sure the paint will stick to a layer of poly under it

Use water-based poly over paint, or it will yellow over time.

I have done paint pens over poly, never actual paint, but I would think it should work just fine.
You can always test it on scrap wood.
