While it seems nice in principle, he should probably be paid a small reasonable fee for his work on this case. Working for free either looks like you’re motivated by politics/beliefs or that you’re getting paid by some organization under the table for your work.

The prosecution in the Chauvin case had several unpaid experts as well, I believe.
