Not many at all, but learn on a cheap knife. It can remove material in a hurry if you're not careful about grit and it'll blunt the tip even faster.
That's not to say don't get one; I love mine FWIW. What I said above is pretty standard advice to anybody who's never used one. I don't use the guides any more and I have a leather belt that fits it for stropping and get great results.

6-8 passes on each side with each belt has worked for me.
