Riley at LB

Watching game reply. Riley was very good against run but got torched in coverage including that almost game breaking pass to Douche or whatever his name was. Maybe should take him out on passing downs.....or is this due to injuries to Beckwith etc

Well, that's called good a offensive scheme. They were able to isolate the LB and the RB. Of course you are gonna have a mismatch there. Also, I do not believe it was an obvious passing down... To pull one of your most aggressive LB's out of the game would be a bad decision.
They ran that play multiple times and it only broke open once, I wouldn't stress about it.

I like him and his play, and you may be correct it may be a scheme situation. they just need to keep him out of coverage situations.

We have had trouble with backs out of the backfield since 2003. Remember the Florida game we lost in '03, we got torched in that game, and later gave up a TD against Ole Miss on an identical play. It is one thing to ask our LBs to drop back into a zone, but asking them to cover an RB man-to-man might be too much to ask.

He is all over the place. I like him alot. There were a couple plays where he got beat, but he didnt give up anything big.

i only remember him getting beat one time down the field....i do remember at least three times where he covered the running back in the flat making very good open field one on one tackles for little or no gain

I believe that Riley was covering Ducre on that long pass near the end of the game that Ducre dropped. He was burned bad and we were lucky Ducre dropped it.
All in all, we just have to chalk it up to a one time personnel mismatch for now until proven otherwise.

He is a great ball player with a great engine, I just dont like him having to cover backs, TE, or rec if we can help it. He seems just a step behind. Maybe blitz him on passing downs or something. Let me just say, for the record I really dont like LB's covering anyone, it just seems like at college level they just get in the way. I know you cant help it sometimes. But this kid had a great game for me to be bring this up, but we cant do this against Florida as I doubt Tebow will miss his wide open guys like he did agianst Ole Miss. We have two weeks.....lets fix it.

Riley is doing a very good job at LB, and for the most part does pretty well in pass coverage too. He's an excellent tackler.
He doesn't quite have the speed to keep up with fast RBs. To me that's less a knock on Riley than maybe a scheme issue that he's being put in those situations so often.

I think he ran down a Miss St RB coming out of the backfield, it took him 15 yds but he caught him.

What will the coaches try against Florida? If the defense has trouble picking up coverage over the middle with linebackers man on man does that mean going to some type of zone coverage?
