He was essentially what Mel Tucker/Dave Aranda are right now. A young HC with a lot of coaching experience (assistant/coordinator) & a great defensive mind.

I think the fact that he spent 3 years of working under Belichick at CLE was big too.

He had a deep Assistant Coach NFL background and a strong pedigree as a Belicheck coaching disciple. Then takes over a down in the dumps Michigan St program and makes then very competitive during an era where only Michigan is the Big Dog in that state for decades. He saw a sleeping Tiger in LSU who could own the state recruiting as the Big Dog versus always having to compete against Michigan. No brained decision for him and LSU. Was a perfect match.

Big simply bc he had NFL experience? Belichick at the time was still just a retread coach like we always see but not close to what he’s become. He had one good year with a Cleveland team that went on to become the Ravens and otherwise was pretty mediocre until a certain QB showed up in NE.

Saban did lead some decent defenses in CLE to be fair
