Strategy of announcing the Coach O firing mid-year?

Did this help or hurt SW in the coaching search? You could argue that the announcement put all AD’s with coaches worth hiring on notice that LSU would come calling and that they should start retention efforts immediately as opposed to waiting until the end of the season to announce and then trying to move fast / blind side.
On the other hand, any good AD would have known that Orgeron wouldn’t be retained whether a formal announcement or not and have themselves ready for courting.
I think the announcement mid year makes it harder on the coach you are trying to hire. They have to listen to rumors for half the season and be put in precarious positions with their players with rumors swirling. Also gives time for boosters to sweeten deals up…

In my opinion, SW didn’t want to chance a scenario like the Les debacle. If O would have finished the season strong then it would have been hard to fire him. Now he doesn’t have to worry about that.

On the flipside, this is twice that LSU has done it and the fanbase has built up a monster hire in their heads. So anything short of that will be a let down.
