If they did hire you back, you can bet your arse that you lose tenure with regard to your retirement etc.
You'll start from zero like a new hire. Like someone else stated, and even if it's on your exit interview, try to get a statement on the books and/or something pertaining to rehire if the mandate is lifted.

In many companies, the difference between new hire and 5 years is a full week of PTO.
