Yikes. Not the way i wanna go

Why is phosgene so dangerous?

Phosgene inhalation may cause initially symptoms of respiratory tract irritation, patients feel fine thereafter, and then die of choking a day later because of build up of fluid in the lungs (delayed onset non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema). Phosgene exposure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.

Phosgene smells like new mown hay and heavier than air if I remember my times in that plant. My dad retired from there after 37 years. Lot of Summer jobs on turnarounds. Sheit will kill you where you stand in large quantity (think rolling cloud at ground level) and in small amounts will drown you on your own fluids days after.

Aniline is a whole different deal. One drop on your skin will kill.

Educational moment: BASF = Badische Anilin & Sodafabrik
English translation from German = Baden Aniline & Soda Factory
