Bald faced do not nest in the ground.

Only one time in my life have I seen them do this. They had a nest in the ground right beside my bunk feeder. Oddly enough, there was a yellowjacket burrow hole right beside the hornet burrow hole. I poured gas in the holes and got both nests. I have seen these bald faced hornets build a nest right on top of the ground in thick weeds, too. The first time, I bushhogged the top half of the nest off and saw them buzzing around as I approached that area for a second swipe with the bushhog. Didn't get stung, thank goodness, but that's when I discovered for a fact that bald faced hornets are faster than a Massey-Ferguson tractor.

There was no yellow at all on these things. They were black. They had two spots they were boiling out of. They were mean enough I have left them alone. They can have that overgrown old fence.
