I have managed to get into 3 different nests of ground nesting bees. Once I was on a tractor spreading dirt piles down. Apparently the yellow jackets had built a big nest in the dirt pile. I jumped off the tractor and ran as soon as I saw them pouring out the ground and only got hit once. I fixed that nest after dark with a bottle of gas, no fire just gas and that killed them. A few years later I was bush hogging along a big drainage ditch when all of a sudden I started getting stung. They hurt like hell and kept chasing me until I got about 100 yards away. Same fix that night. These were not yellow jackets they looked like bumble bees and they tore my arse up. The last time was damn yello jackets again and me and my son were playing with my dog, throwing a ball to him and he would run and retrieve it. Well, he disturbed a nest and they came pouring out the ground. They swarmed the dog and them me and my son. I had to run in and grab the dog to drag him away because he had simply laid down and was yelping and crying every time one got him. I ended up with 25-30 stings. My son had 15 or so and the poor dog had at least 50 stings. Brought him to the vet and he gave him a Benadryl shot and some steroids to take for a couple of days and he was fine. I was in misery for a day or two. I know there are at least two different species of ground nesters and they ain’t all yellow jackets. But I have never seen a true hornet in the ground just in those big arse paper nests.
