There's always been inflation. 1970 is was 5.72%. Today it is 5.25%. Material things were not as important to that generation as to today's generation. That's where the crux is.

What does that have to do with a spouse not working?
I'm not against both parents working (my wife did for 4 years), but with promotions, we got to the point where my salary was enough for us to live on if she wanted to quit work. She hated her job, and decided to quit. We've been doing this for the last 7 months, and routinely save at least 25% of my monthly take-home pay.
Inflation is just an excuse.
