Charlie Mac was a good man and won a lot of ballgames. But he had some Les Miles in him and the way he handled Bert Jones is one example.

Jones hurt his shoulder in 1978 and was never the same. That put limits on what could have been a Hall of Fame career. In today’s medical climate for arm injuries, they probably would have been able to fix his shoulder and probably would have kept him from trying to come back too soon.

didferent times, different era, he was pretty old school with some adaptability, players loved him and played their hearts out and above their heads for him, love the Casanova interview recalling a conversation he was having with Paul Brown and some of the big shots when he first got to Cincy, to paraphrase, Casanova: yeah, if this had happened and that wouldn't have happened we'd have been national champs last year! PB and everyone else: gut busting laughter, Casanova: did I say something funny? Brown: you guys for the most part were undersized, under-athletic, and slow but there's something going on down there with Mac that gets every ounce out of every one of you and it's always worth us taking a look down there
