And only the Eldar (the Elves that went over the Sea) would have seen the Trees. The Elves that stayed in Middle Earth didn't look upon them, there was a mountain range that blocked the light from directly shining on Middle Earth. That's why those Elves preferred starlight.

The Eldar didn't travel back to Middle Earth until after the Trees were destroyed (with the exception of Elwe..., another deep dive into lore. But although he's long dead by the Second Age, he might be mentioned, because he's the one Elf who married a Maia and had a child- and his line led directly to Elrond and the Numenoreans).
