Didn't happen over night.
Back in the '70s we had a politician right here in Louisiana who played a major role in giving the mainland Chinese their first major footprint here in the West, when our own Russell Long cast his vote to "pay away" the Panama Canal Treaty.
Supposedly the Chinese moved right in to having significant say-so in running it at both ends.
It was our first really disappointing introduction into how the Left and their weak dupes on the so-called Right allow them to play the "word game."
Which in this instance allowed them to rationalize that the phrase in perpetuity actually meant something other than what those words in that particular syntax, to them, only implied and couldn't be considered "written in stone."
It's been downhill ever since.
