My prediction is this will be an extremely popular program. Which makes sense as this is originally a republican idea being implemented by the democrats. The last big republican idea implemented by a democratic president is likewise very popular today.
From a pure policy perspective I certainly believe a direct subsidy is more effective to achieving the policy goals of this federal expenditure than a child tax credit. Alternatively, I’d entertain eliminating this expenditure entirely but there isnt a political party interested in cutting spending. So as long as our federal budget contains mountains of corporate welfare I’m happy to see individual families get thrown a bone here.
It’s also weird to me to see so many people proudly stating they will opt out. Since when has this board been in favor of giving the government interest free loans?

No kids here but...
If you direct deposit $300 into my girlfriend's bank account every month, she will piss away every penny of that money at Starbucks, Target, online clothing retailer, etc.
If you send her a $3000 check in March, she will deposit that entire check into her IRA and allow her investments to grow until retirement.
I'm sure a lot of men - and some women - can sympathize.
